Two men and a woman have been seriously injured after being hit by a bus in South Africa.

The bus was returning from a ferry from Port Elizabeth to Durban when it crashed on Thursday.

It hit one of the three people on a motorcycle who was being pulled by a car on the N1 highway east of Msimbazazi on the south coast, police said.

The injured were taken to hospital.

“The bus was speeding and I couldn’t understand why. A person (behind) a motorbike yelled at me to stop and told me the bus was speeding,” said the 29-year-old driver, who did not want to be identified.

“I slowed down but I couldn’t stop in time and the bus hit us. I was driving at about 60km/hr so I was not speeding.”

A government official said it was unclear whether speed was a factor in the accident.

The bus was damaged and had to be towed.
