But there’s just too many kinks to be worked out. I find it weird that we’re supposed to dig our camera, turn it on, and then be comfortable with a secondary UI. The whole thing should already be set up, with “Go” and “Debug” modes selected and waiting. It’s clear now that Adobe is taking a more cautious approach to developing Lightroom than it has with other tools. The end result is better, sure, but not enough to make it worth the wait. And the wait is not so long anymore, either.
How can I make layers editable?
Whenever we create a new layer in Photoshop, it is uneditable by default. This is done in the layer properties panel where you can make a layer editable or not. Photoshop never touches your image. It allows you to see a “ghosted” version of your photo on top of the original.

If you want to experience the new and improved features, you’re in for an interesting experience. Page through the user guide for the update, and you’ll find some basic camera settings that you’ve probably seen before. Picking regions and applying actions is one way to make a tweak, though.
