In the face of death, a man awakens in a strange, strange world. Down by a riverbank, he finds a small, round stone that has a swirling hole in the center.
Shaking with fear and revulsion, he attempts to put the stone to his lips, but it is too hot for his skin. And his skin tears as he tries to touch it, and the stone drops from his hands, and so he leaves it for the birds to find.
A few days later, that same man again sits at the edge of a small river. The water is fast and the wind is rising. But, as he sits, a young woman suddenly emerges from the opposite bank with a small stone in her hand.
The same man again reaches out for it and again finds it too hot for his skin. So the stones of the world are of different temperatures. The man puts this one down, turns away, and the woman walks to the riverbank with her stone in hand.
The man feels as if the wind is suddenly pressing harder against his back as he stands there, waiting, until the woman is back at her side, and then he reaches down and picks up his stone, and the wind is behind him as he prepares to put it to his mouth.
And he hesitates.
And as he hesitates, the world splits in half.
The man’s awareness now stretches across two distinct planes of existence. Here, he is a character in a story that he cannot hope to fully comprehend; he is also something else altogether. But this latter, more powerful something has been a part of him from the start, which, as he feels the wind against his back, rises now to meet him.
He puts the stone to his mouth and then, more than he ever knew, he is aware of his existence and of the existence of the world at his back.
He is angry. He is afraid. But he is inescapably drawn into a struggle from which he cannot escape.

In contrast, the reason ‘to get rid of painful feelings’ was more frequent among the former group than among the others. Only after lifetime analysis does the reason ‘to fulfil a fantasy’ become a significant factor. The reasons for’recovery’ were very different. The most frequent reason for recovery was the influence of friends (68%), followed by the influence of family (52.3%) and the influence of others (25.4%). The reason to fulfil a fantasy drops from 66.7% to 34% after lifetime analysis.
