Now, if you werent one of the lucky fans of this epic blockbuster movie that got the extended cut in the theaters, youll want to get this. Many people on forums ask me why, as Ive never seen the extended cut, and Ive never heard a lot of people say they liked it. These are some of the things I cant help but think about when I consider the rest of the extended cut. The first time they screened it for Cameron, he thought its a bit too many visuals at once, and I liked how he wasnt specific about how he felt the Navi were portrayed, but that some of the graphics seem too big, and not at all like the scale of the world as seen in the theatrical version. So, he made it into a longer, more narrative-driven film, and that more dialogue, and less action. Theres also the decision to have Garth Greenwell, to provide a little more character development, and a bit more of a past story on Owen. Of course, this is a soft reboot that gives it a more humanistic vision. I think its nice to have a story like this from someone who doesnt seem to have romantic interest in the Navi, and is more interested in reflecting the details of human nature that the contact with the Navi has somehow exacerbated. Perhaps its the success of GREEN ROOM, but it seemed to me as if he wasnt really given a choice, and just went with the content of his statement. The film also gives more time to the relationship between the Navi and Earth, and the real connotations of the xenophobic attitudes expressed towards the Navi in the first film. It also shows that the Navi are not above attacking humans, as their attempted attack on the people on Earth is shown to be pretty ineffective. The thing that I didnt like about the extended cut is the title. I dont understand why its called an extended cut at all, when theres nothing new added to it, and its no more extended than the theatrical cut. Its just four extra scenes added to the film. If theres no additional footage, they cant justify calling it an extended cut. All that aside, the extended cut actually shows the Navi as creatures, who really do live in trees, and that they are a species of humanoids, and reflect the film even more like the SINISTER RING trailer, and show the relationship between the Navi and humans in a more interesting way. The title is somewhat obnoxious, and they could have called it a different extension to the theatrical cut. Also, much like the theatrical cut, there is a lot of new dialogue on Earth with Ashtar. In fact, some of his remarks seem to come off as looking down on life on Earth and the human species. (Also, what the hell happened to his religious cult and Ashtar and his worshippers?) The film also includes the allegorical elements of the first film, and it wasnt strong enough in my opinion. The main one was the rejection of the Colonists, but I feel as if they tried too hard to shoehorn in allegory. Humans reject the idea of being only 1% of the worlds population, and the idea of living in squalor, and that you need a large population to maintain a standard of living. This was way too much. The other sub-narrative was the extra symbolism of the tobacco and alcohol. However, all that aside, theres a lot more interesting things going on in the extended cut, and the characters feel more developed, and theres more of a purposeful clarity in the film.
